After years of continued displacement, millions of Syrians are now spread throughout various western countries under the title of refugee. While the humanitarian aid was undoubtedly beneficial to those recipients, the need for it may soon come to an end.

“Syria’s Foreign Minister, Walid al-Moualem, told the United Nations General Assembly on Saturday that the country was ready for the voluntary return of refugees who fled during the conflict,” SBS News reports. The Foreign Minister said that conditions in Syria were now fine for the return of displaced Syrians. However, he fears that the return of Syrians to Syria may not be so simple.

Moulam blames “some western countries” for “spreading irrational fears” that may keep refugees from returning to their home country. “We have called upon the international community and humanitarian organizations to facilitate these returns,” says Moulam. “They are politicizing what should be a purely humanitarian issue.”

With millions of refugees spread across Europe, it remains to be seen if their stay in the West is meant to be permanent.
