Mayor of Riace, Domenico Lucano, has been put under house arrest for suspected organization of “marriages of convenience” as a means for his alleged private immigration agenda. His actions are in strict opposition to Italy’s new right wing immigration agenda, though he has been enacting pro-migrant policy in his town since 1998.
The charge “detailed by prosecutors involves the arrangement of marriages of convenience to get around immigration regulations,” BBC reports. “Prosecutors said they had wire-tapped Mr Lucano’s phone and recorded at least one exchange in which the mayor appeared to suggest marriage as a solution to a woman’s immigration problems, in a way they said could not be misunderstood.”
One thing that was recorded through Mr Lucano’s telephone calls was when he suggested marrying an Italian citizen was “the only way forward” for a Nigerian who had already been denied residency within the country three times.
BBC further notes, “In the excerpts he is said to refer to a similar wedding in the past, and his ability to arrange a ceremony quickly. He is also quoted offering to acquire an ID card to say the woman was a resident of Riace.”
