After winning four consecutive elections, Angela Merkel’s reign is finally coming to an end. “German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced on Monday that she would not seek re-election when her term expires in 2021,” CNN reports.

It remains possible that Merkel does not even make until 2021. Confidence in her and the ruling coalition has been falling continuously for years. Recent elections continue to show that the German people are moving in a new political direction.

Merkel effectively announcing her pending resignation will likely only expedite the process in which Germans flee from the dying political structure in Germany. Three years is a long time for an unpopular Chancellor to remain in power. There exists political structures in Germany that could put her out of office sooner than the 2021 election cycle.

"It is time today for me to start a new chapter," Merkel told reporters in Berlin. "This fourth term is my last term as Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. In the next Bundestag election in 2021, I will not run again as Chancellor. I will not run for the German Bundestag any more, and I do not want any other political office."

Merkel is not only stepping down as leader, but desires to leave the political scene entirely. For a leader that has held power for 13 years to all the sudden become non-existent in German politics will surely be a shock to the country. Potentially volatile times lie ahead as the nation aims to discover a new identity.

“Merkel also announced on Monday that she would stand down from the chairmanship of her center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party after 18 years in the post,” CNN reports. The CDU along with the Social Democratic Party have ruled Germany for all but three years over the last seven decades.

This is nothing short of a monumental time for German politics, and perhaps the beginning to the great decline of one political form and subsequently the rise of another. The sun has officially begun to set on the era of Merkel. Tomorrow’s sun lies waiting to be discovered.
